Galway County Council’s Public and Contextual Artist and Curator Panel June 1st 2013 – May 31st 2014 |
|
| |
In December 2011 Galway County Councils Arts Office created a panel of artists from which a number of exciting and innovative Public Art Projects were commissioned. This panel allowed Galway County Council to plan a broad, cohesive and meaningful programme that responded to a number of themes, communities and contexts.
Based on the success of this panel, and the possibility of commissioning further work in this manner, Galway County Council is inviting artists to be included on a new short term panel from which candidates may be shortlisted to develop proposals for individual commissions and projects in 2013/4.
Galway County Council is also interested in hearing from qualified individuals and organizations with curatorial experience who wish to be considered as part of this process. These individuals and organizations may be selected or shortlisted to develop proposals for co-curated and co-produced projects and programmes in the County in partnership with Galway County Council. Please note, project proposals are not required at this stage.
As part of our Public Art commissioning process, selected proposals for each scheme will be chosen by an appointed committee, which may include independent curators, appropriate experts and local and community representatives, depending on the scheme.
The panel will operate for one year, June 1st 2013 and ending May 31st 2014. Inclusion on the panel does not guarantee short listing or commissioning, nor does it exclude alternative commissioning avenues by Galway County Council.
Public Art commissioned by Galway County Council must add to the local cultural landscape and be in line with international contemporary art practice. Our Public Art Programme, which endeavours to connect with citizens of all age, nationality and ability, will consist of four programme strands;
- Site-integrated sculptures
- Residency programmes
- Once-off innovative projects
- Contextual Art (includes artists working in healthcare and education settings, as well as those involved in initiatives to facilitate creativity in older years in County Galway)
|
|
| |
Artists and Curators wishing to be included in this panel should be aware of and adhere to Garda vetting and child protection procedures in their relevant field. This opportunity is open to all artistic disciplines and commissioned works and schemes may be permanent, temporary, participatory and ephemeral. Collaborative submissions are also welcome, either between artists/curators or with appropriate specialists.

GET TOGETHER 2013 |
|
| |
A day of engaged sharing, networking and information provision
Friday 28 June, 2013
National College of Art & Design, Dublin
Visual Artists Ireland is pleased to announce that the Get Together 2013 will take place on Friday, June 28th at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin.
The Get Together 2013 gives practicing artists and those involved in the contemporary art world the opportunity to hear from and engage in discussion with invited international and local speakers about a number of key concerns and opportunities.
This day-long event comprises four strands that will run simultaneously: Short Information Briefings, Art Writing, Current Trends in Academia and Cultural Corridors. The Common Room Cafe will provide a social space through out the day for taking time out, networking and gaining information. A Speed Curating event will also take place, where artists and curators will meet in quick-fire sessions. During lunch, our keynote speaker (TBA) will deliver a talk, and the day will culminate with a wine reception where discussions from the day can be continued in an informal way.
There will also be a prize draw, where the winner will receive an original work by Nathalie du Pasquier entitled Sligo (5). Your paid registration will entitle you to a ticket as well as entry on the day.
STRAND ONE: SHORT BRIEFINGS
Quick, informative sessions on a variety of topics relating to the visual arts.
Talks include: Empty Spaces, (The Complex, Occupy Space, Household); Self Curating (Mary Conlon); Outside the Box: Becoming an activist in your local area (Linda Shevlin, Lisa Fingleton); Thinking About Abroad (ArtQuest); European Cultural Contact Point: The Arts Council Perspective; Internships (the aspirations and the reality); Arts Audiences (Jen Coppinger); Artists' Payments; Legal Contracts; Digital Archiving / Limited Edition Publishing (Leszek Wolnik); Collaboration and Exchange (Peter Richards).
STRAND TWO: ART WRITING
'Publicise, Interrogate, Record', in partnership with AICA Ireland.
'Publicise, Interrogate, Record' will build on the focus of the Get Together 2012 Art Writing strand: the rise of independent online (and other) visual arts publishing in Ireland. This year, discussion will centre on exploring how the visual arts can reach out beyond its own media, to more mainstream journalism in order to address wider audiences.
Speakers from the worlds of academia, art history and representatives from the mainstream media will consider the multiple meanings, functions and potential of publicising the visual arts, addressing diverse topics that include: art-speak, the role of press-release, mainstream media perceptions of the visual arts sector, and the role of exhibition catalogues and monographs.
This strand will also include presentations from Mea Lerm Hayes of Ulster University. More to come about this section.
STRAND THREE: ACADEMIA
Val Connor and Una Henry talk on current trends in visual arts academia both in Ireland and in Europe.
STRAND FOUR: CULTURAL CORRIDORS
Patrick Fox of CREATE leads a series of curated talks by artists who work collaboratively, looking especially at the Dublin Liverpool 'cultural corridor'.
Following on from a CREATE's successful involvement in the 2012 Get Together, a selection of artists will reflect on the motivations behind their work, to elaborate on the processes they undertake in the creation of work, and to consider these in relation to the role of the artist in civic life. The emphasis will on shaping discussions with artists whose collaborations and artistic process inspire them to engage in social, environmental and political arenas.
SPEED CURATING
This event will take place after the talks, and provide artists and curators with the opportunity to meet on a one-to-one basis and discuss current work projects and interests in a sociable 'speed dating' format. Curators from Ireland and abroad will be available for this fast paced event. Places will need to be pre-booked, and allocated on a first come first served basis.
[When we have received full payment for your attendance, you will receive details on how to apply to be part of the Speed Dating event. As there is limited availability, it is important to ensure that you register and pay quickly]
COMMON ROOM CAFE
The Common Room Café is a social space within the event, where people can take time out, relax, network and also gain access to some of the opportunities made available to them by leading visual arts organisations. Stalls around the café area will display each organisation's services / facilities and representatives will be on hand to offer advice to the artists and curators in attendance.
Your payment includes a light lunch and refreshments as well as access to our networking drinks party that will take place at the end of the day. It is important to register as quickly as possible to take advantage of the early bird discount (20%) and to allow us to fully plan for the day.
We are currently developing even more content which we will publicise as it is confirmed.

A Celebration /Gathering of Roscommon Writings |
|
| |
is a major initiative to redress the neglected literary heritage of County Roscommon. The county is either birthplace or is strongly associated with an astonishing array of writers or composers including among others, Douglas Hyde, Percy French, O’Carolan, John McGahern, Oliver Goldsmith, John Waters, Brian Leyden, Brian O’Doherty, Sir William Wilde and B.M. Croker. This formidable list has the capacity to spark a hitherto untapped interest in the county, particularly among the many tourists who flock to this country for summer schools, arts and literary festivals.
Michael O’Dea (author of Sunfireand Turn Your Head published by Dedulus Press) and John O’Dea (ex Chairperson of Sligo Arts festival and The Model Arts Centre and author of a book entitled Exposure) are both from Roscommon town and see their anthology project as a gift to the county they love. We see this (non commercial) publication as an opportunity for Roscommon County Council to enhance the county’s artistic/heritage profile by associating a number of cultural activities and actions with it.
We wish to include in the book a series of artistic sketches/drawings/works in black and white that will enhance the artistic/cultural feel of our anthology and Roscommon.
ARTIST’S BRIEF
Artists, like the authors must have a strong connection with County Roscommon, having been born there, lived/living there or having a close relation (parent/partner) from the county.
The work can be produced in any form and size but for the purposes of the anthology it will be reproduced in black and white (with dimensions of approx 125 mm x105 mm, either portrait or landscape format) AND must be recognisable/identifiable as being connected/associated with and suggestive of County Roscommon. A maximum of 3 works per artists will be accepted.
This anthology will be a high quality production. We are looking for original art work that will reflect and represent Roscommon as an artistically vibrant county.Proposals are therefore invited from artists who are interested in making a response to the idea of the anthology.
A panel of artists along with the editors will select the work, with the editors having the final decision. It is our intention that all works selected by the panel (even those not used in the anthology) will form an exhibition to coincide with the launch of the book.
Works must be submitted by Easter weekend. Photos/scanned copies of the works should be emailed to both editors at iamjodea@gmail.com and modros@hotmail.com. A delivery point for the actual works will be announced closer to March 17th. Enjoy and UP ROS.

(Accrediting body: NUI Maynooth, Dept of Applied Social Studies)

The downloadable Prospectus includes information on Certificate content and dates Download the Prospectus for 2012/2013
For details on making an application please see ‘Application Process’ and download the ‘Application Form’
The Certificate in Youth Arts aims to introduce those working in the non-formal education sector to the concepts, principles and practice of youth arts using a context and practice approach.
The Importance of Youth Arts
For many years NYCI has prioritised youth arts as a key medium to engage and communicate with children and young people, through NYCI’s Youth Arts Programme (a partnership between NYCI, the Arts Council and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs).
NYCI is dedicated to the development and advancement of youth arts in Ireland. It aims specifically to realise the potential of young people through good quality arts practice within youth organisations and to develop appropriate policies and activities at local, regional and national level.
NYCI aims to ensure that all young people, as citizens, have the opportunity to participate in and engage with arts and cultural practice in Ireland as an intrinsic right (Article 27 UN Human Rights) as well as for its value and efficacy as an educational medium.
NYCI provides strategic support for arts practice in youth work, encouraging the creation of safe and supportive environments that value imagination, originality, daring and experimentation.
An energised, growing and sustainable youth arts community which spans all art forms and delivers quality outcomes for young people, is vital to ensure the future cultural, social and economic well being of Ireland. A vibrant arts sector, of which engaged, creative, vocal young people are a part, underpins a healthy contemporary society.
The ultimate aim of the Certificate in Youth Arts is to further develop and enhance arts practice in youth work, so that more young people have the opportunity to experience arts in a non formal educational setting as makers, creators, participants, audience members and critics.
It also aims to ensure that these are high quality experiences and also to promote the best practice for working with young people developed by the youth work sector and how this can influence and contribute to arts practice in Ireland.
The course is delivered in seven modules via a mix of presentations, group discussion, small group work, personal assignments, guest tutor inputs and site visits.
Past guest expert inputs have been provided by Dr Maurice Devlin, Dept of Applied Social Studies, NUI Maynooth, Orlaith McBride, Arts Council Director and past Director of National Association for Youth Drama, Philippa Donnellan, Director of Broadreach at CoisCéim Dance Theatre Company and Elaine Agnew, composer and music practitioner. The Ark and the IFI have just launched a collaborative research endeavor with the hopes of informing a forthcoming arts/media residency to be housed between the two institutions.
The residency will focus on an artist, or creative practitioner, working with digital technologies and children ages 9-13. The Ark & the IFI request information from digital artists in Roscommon! The survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/digitalartsdublinsurvey |
